Pupils are usually excluded from school as a result of a serious incident, or series of incidents.

Exclusions can either be temporary (for a pre-determined number of openings or half days), or permanent, when the pupil is removed from the school register and alternative provision is found in another educational establishment (the authority may also reach an agreement with a child's parents to move a child to another school without the use of a formal exclusion or 'removal from register').

In general there are more boys excluded from school than girls. The majority of exclusions from schools are for General or Persistent Disobedience closely followed by Verbal Abuse of Members of Staff. Generally pupils registered for Free Meals, pupils with Additional Support Needs and pupils Looked After by the authority have higher exclusion rates than other pupils.

The Scottish Government report, states that the unique pupil identifier introduced in 2006. should enable the records of pupils excluded more than once to be linked. However, not all authorities are able to stop pupils with 2 or more exclusions being counted as separate pupils with one exclusion each.
