West Lothian Council Education and Cultural Services is responsible for the provision of education in 11 secondary schools (9 non-denominational & 2 denominational), 66 primary schools, 14 nursery schools, 41 nursery classes and 5 special schools. There are also 31 community education establishments and 14 public libraries. There are also two colleges West Lothian College & Oatridge Agricultural College.

Data held in the 'Databank' already covers data published on the SNS website on topics such as pupil numbers and attainment at datazone level, and topics such as school attendance, looked after pupils, children with records of needs and ethnicity at authority level. There is also data on the numbers in further & higher education. These data have not been updated since 2008.

The intention is to map data such as pupil numbers and pupil attainment, by home location. These topics, have traditionally been reported by school but there is also interest in the performance of children by home locality as the numbers of transfers to schools outwith the child's (home) catchment are growing. Further work is therefore being undertaken to map some of the data by home location. Results will still be presented by school as these are clearly of equal interest.

Notes:

Record of Needs: The Education (Scotland) Act 1980, previously placed a duty on education authorities to to open and keep a Record of Needs of each child aged over two with special educational needs which were pronounced, specific or complex and required continuing review. These processs has been superceeded and children who would previously have had a RON will now have their needs met through a Staged Intervention Process. Children with complex needs will get a CSP.
Individual Education Plans: Scottish Executive guidance suggests that Individualised Educational Programmes (IEP) should be opened for all children in special schools and units and all children with an existing Records of Needs (RoN) in mainstream schools. In addition, children in mainstream schools who do not have RoNs but require ?significant planned intervention? should have IEPs with targets. This may be as a result of an assessment following implementation of the Additional Support for Learning Act, or an ongoing IEP awaiting assessment for a CSP.
Coordinated Support Plans A CSP is compiled for a child or young person with additional support needs arising from complex or multiple factors which require a high degree of co-ordination and support. A CSP could also be allocated to a child where an IEP does not fulfil this function. A CSP is not a direct replacement for a RON.
