Windows keyboard shortcuts:

Access Keys & Government Standards

Access keys are keyboard short cuts that help navigation through a website.

If you have difficulty in using a mouse or similar devices, you can use keyboard shortcuts. Information on how to use each of the keyboard shortcuts available is below. They enable you to navigate using only the keyboard. There are UK Government Standards defining which keys should activate which pages, but as this site doesn't contain all of the requisite pages we have used the 'spare' numbers to link to the main sections.

How to use Access Keys

In most Windows browsers hold ALT and press the access key (Opera uses Shift + Esc followed by key). On Apple use Cmd + key (except Opera).

Please note that some assistive technology tools such as the IBM HomePage Reader and WindowEyes already make use of the alt+[access key] combinations. As such, users of these tools will not be able to use these access keys. These access key assignments are based on research into best practice across the web (in an attempt to be consistent with other sites' access keys).
